Northern Italian region
Emilia-Romagna is a region in northern Italy, which extends from the Apennines to the Po river in the north. The region is known for medieval cities, rich gastronomy and seaside resorts. The capital, Bologna, is a lively city, home to the university dating back to the 11th century, characterized by the porticoes along the streets and squares of the medieval centre. Ravenna, on the Adriatic coast, is famous for its brightly colored Byzantine mosaics.
